Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 5 medium potatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped

Equipment

  • Casserole Dish
  • Large Skillet

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a medium casserole dish with olive oil.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart, until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Season with salt, black pepper, thyme, and paprika. Stir in tomato sauce and beef broth. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.
  5. In a bowl, mix heavy cream with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  6. Layer sliced potatoes in the casserole dish. Add a layer of beef mixture, drizzle cream, and sprinkle mozzarella. Repeat layers, finishing with mozzarella and cheddar on top.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20-25 minutes until potatoes are tender and top is golden and bubbly.
  8. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley.

Notes

You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version. Adjust seasoning to taste.
